Avernakø welcomes you with a harbour on the western part of the island and a landscape that quickly turns into small roads, open fields, coastline and low horizons. The island is narrow and elongated, so water and wind are rarely far away, whether you are walking, cycling or continuing on from the ferry.
Here the island experience is not built around one big stop, but around the movement between them: asphalt and gravel paths, winding roads, stretches of beach and places where you can slow the pace down. The island is well suited for both hiking and cycling, and you can also walk all the way around along the beach.
At the bird tower on the western end there is a view over the coastal lake Hovedsøen. In the spring and summer months, the area can host breeding birds and resting birds such as geese, swans, terns, ducks and cormorants. The beach by Hovedsøen is protected during the breeding season, so it is worth reading the signs and keeping your distance.
Avernakø was historically two islands, Avernak and Korshavn, before the road embankment across Drejet linked them together. That story fits the island’s shape well: a narrow stretch of land where landscape, ferry, harbours and local history lie like pearls on a string — without the island needing to make a big fuss about itself.
