Bagges Dæmning

Out between water and sky

Bagges Dæmning stretches out into the northern end of Ringkøbing Fjord, so the trip feels more like a passage through the fjord than along it. There is not much here to steal the eye: water surfaces, low sky and long views toward Søndervig to the north and Ringkøbing to the southeast.

Today, the dam is used by both walkers and cyclists, and the simple line through the landscape makes the place easy to read. On days with activity on the fjord, kitesurfers can add a more restless layer to the view, while birdlife remains on both sides of the dam.

A dam that did not conquer the fjord

The history of the place is less polished than the view. The dam was built as part of an attempt to drain the area, create more agricultural land and make access across the fjord easier. The project lasted only a short time: a storm broke the dam in two places, and the reclamation was abandoned.

The old breaches are part of the experience today, because in 2016 bridges were built so the connection could once again be used by pedestrians and cyclists.

Birds, reeds and black sun

The area on both sides of Bagges Dæmning is described as an important resting and feeding area for several bird species. In late summer and early autumn, large flocks of starlings can settle in the reed beds on the eastern side, where the fjord suddenly takes on a dark, moving pattern overhead.
