Baldersbæk Plantation is not just forest. The walk leads from the more formal setting by Villa Baldersbæk out toward Holme Å, where forest, bog, heath and meadows change character along the way. The lakes by the garden landscape give the place an almost manor-like feel before the path flows into more open nature.
The plantation is a clear example of a Copenhagen plantation: heath areas that wealthy Copenhageners had bought up and planted. Here the poor Jutland heath was turned into forest, work and recreational landscape. That history is still present in the contrast between the villa’s cultivated setting and the valley’s more open terrain.
Along Holme Å lies an old oak scrub, and the river valley is edged by grazed heath bogs and meadows. The plantation is also known as a bird locality, including birds of prey, and just over 100 bird species have been recorded in the area. Wildlife cannot of course be ordered in advance, but traces of beavers along the stream and red deer in the area show that the forest is not only for hikers.
The garden close to Villa Baldersbæk is private and not open to the public, so the best experience lies in the transition between the visible layout, the path and the landscape around the stream.
