Billund Church does not stand on its own behind a churchyard wall, but as part of Billund Centret in the middle of town. That makes it a slightly different parish church: here the church space meets the library, theater, meeting rooms and other everyday functions under the same roof.
Inside the church hall, the atmosphere is characterized by mocha-colored bricks, dark-stained wood, raw concrete and dark purple cushions. The room is rectangular, and the seating is arranged on either side of a center line that draws the eye toward the altar to the west.
Above the altar table, a stainless-steel cross motif brings the room together. It was made by Helga and Bent Exner, who are also behind the church's altar silver, baptismal bowl and baptismal jug. In the church space, you can also notice Erik A. Frandsen's mosaic with dahlias and the alabaster stones in the large glass facade.
Behind the church lies a local story about Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, Ole Kirk's Foundation and the wish to create a gathering place for Billund. The result was not only a church, but a center for cultural, Christian and general activities. Outside, the freestanding tower stands out with a carillon that continues to sound throughout the day.
The freestanding bell tower by Billund Church is 17 meters high and is part of the church’s modern 1970s complex in Billund Centret. The tower houses four church bells, while the carillon from 1982 consists of 29 bells.
The carillon plays daily at 7:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The melodies follow the year: Christmas hymns in December, spring songs in April and May, and harvest- and autumn-themed tones in September and October.
The altar table stands toward the west, where the church's central axis draws the eye forward toward the altar. Above the table, a cross motif in stainless steel gathers the space; it was made by Helga and Bent Exner, who also created the church's altar silver.
Altar table runners and the five chasubles by Inge Toft are changed according to the liturgical colors of the church year. In the dark room with mocha-colored tiles, dark-stained wood, and deep purple cushions, the textiles become one of the most striking shifts in color.
