Birkesø is a place where the vast flat landscape of Lille Vildmose really gets to take up space. From the Birkesø Pavilion at the northern end of the lake there is a view over the water and the bird islands, and screens and posters make it easier to understand what is going on out there.
The lake quickly became interesting for birds after restoration. The water surface and the islands serve as a breeding ground, larder and hunting ground, so waterfowl, waders and birds of prey can all be seen here. Binoculars make sense here, but even without a bird guide the place is worth standing still in: shallow water, open light and a horizon that is in no hurry.
Birkesø is not just a lake you happen to come across by chance. The restoration was initiated to give Lille Vildmose a more natural water balance and to protect Tofte Mose from drainage. That makes the view more than a pretty scene: the water is part of the work to keep the raised bog wet and alive.
There is a trail connection from Lille Vildmosecentret to Birkesø Pavilion, and you can get there on foot, by bicycle or with Tørvetoget on selected days during the season. There is no parking right by the pavilion, so the trip out there is part of the experience.
