Gjellerodde is a place where the Limfjord is not just a view, but a working force shaping the landscape. Here the coast, salt marsh, heath, and small lakes meet in a low, open area north of Lemvig, while the moraine hills southwest of Gjellergaard recall a much older glacial history.
The special thing about the spit is that the landscape can be read in lines. The beach ridges show how sand and material from the coast have gradually extended the spit, and Gjeller Sø is not an ordinary lake, but a cut-off lagoon. In the southeastern corner, the process continues with a recurved spit that is in the process of closing off new lagoon lakes.
The area is protected nature with, among other things, heath, salt marsh, and bog, and it has been designated a bird protection area and Ramsar site. For visitors, this means a landscape where you should move about thoughtfully, but also where views, birdlife, and fjord air are close to the roads and paths.
Gjellerodde is also more than geology. The Planet Trail passes through the area as a model of the Solar System, and on the south side of the spit stands the memorial stone for the poet Thøger Larsen. At Gjeller Krog, the traces of older coastal settlement and the daily life of fishing farmers lie side by side with the fjord’s slow work.
Bestig Odden is the nature playground in the summerhouse area by Gjellerodde Strand north of Lemvig. It is located close to the beach, a trail, and the open Limfjord landscape, so play is directly connected with the nature of the headland.
The municipality’s material describes it as perhaps Lemvig Municipality’s largest and best nature playground. The name suits the place well: around Gjellerodde, the landscape can be read as ice age, coastal processes, beach ridges, and isolated coastal lagoons.
Gjellergaard is located at the tip of Gjellerodde as a preserved local farmhouse, where the building style and living conditions of the western Jutland fishing farmer are the focal point. The old part is furnished with rooms and furniture that give an impression of a home in the area around the year 1900.
In the sheep house, old farming and fishing tools are displayed together with a Limfjord boat and a tar work setup. The farm is also situated in the headland's protected coastal landscape with strand plain, heath, and Gjeller Lake around it.
The shelter site is located in the forest at the far end of Gjellerodde and consists of several shelters gathered at one primitive overnight site. There is a grill and campfire area as well as tables and benches, and smaller groups can stay overnight without reservation if there is space available.
The site is in a protected coastal landscape, where beach ridges, coastal lagoons and spit formation still characterize the area. There is no parking right next to the shelters, so the last stretch is part of the stay.
