Esrum Monastery is not a complete monastic complex, and that is precisely why the site is worth reading. The surviving building is only one wing of a much larger complex, and out on the grounds you can sense how much has disappeared, while the landscape still bears traces of the monastery’s practical work.
The Cistercian monks were not only concerned with prayer. Life in the monastery was also about land, water, craftsmanship and operations, and the area around Esrum was shaped by building work, ponds, canals, a mill and workshops.
In the old monastery building, a permanent exhibition about the Cistercians is shown, and there are changing exhibitions about the monasteries’ heyday and decline. In the Abbot’s Hall, look for Renaissance wall paintings, while the monastery garden outside gathers a selection of medieval medicinal herbs.
For families, the site offers several small changes of pace: a marked route, nature playground and sheep pen sit alongside the garden, the shop and Møllecaféen. This makes the visit feel less like a stiff museum and more like a walk through a historic working landscape.
Esrum Monastery & Møllegård is located in Nationalpark Kongernes Nordsjælland close to Gribskov and Esrum Sø. The national park’s information point is located in the monastery shop, and outside opening hours brochures are available by the gable of the shop.
